A position in Special Education varies depending on the NPH home. However, the overall goal in all programs is to provide individual attentional and to best educate our students with a variety of learning deficits, physical or mental disabilities and/or other specific needs. The intention is to develop an individual working program and to stimulate/improve the working of inclusion of these children in collaboration with the school. Students may need assistance in basic competency and life skills through advanced learning disabilities.
Children come to NPH with a variety of disadvantaged backgrounds. Some of our children come to us with moderate to severe disabilities, and many of our special needs students receive occupational, speech and physical therapy. Many of our students also may have learning disabilities and also receive special education courses, workshops and therapies.
As the program varies home to home, the volunteer in this role may be asked to teach classes with lessons that are focused on increasing motor skills, gaining independence, improving personal hygiene, and integrating into the society of NPH. Volunteers may be asked to manage a vocational training program as well, which integrates students into a job or role in the house to further improve their independence skills, motor skills and social skills. In addition, volunteers will not only work in the school but also with the caregivers and staff in the on-site special needs home.
Volunteers in this role are patient, flexible and truly enjoy working with children with special needs. Volunteers must have experience working with children with special needs and we prefer that volunteers have a degree in special education. Volunteers must have high organizational and communication skills to plan classes, create reports, maintain their own schedule and work with teachers, staff, therapists and children at NPH.
Each volunteer chooses an hogar (group of children of the same age living together) at the beginning of their year. Each home’s Volunteer Coordinator will communicate the expectations for hogar time. Usually, it is six days a week, 6 to 8 p.m., but this might vary per home. This has been described as the most fulfilling part of volunteering, the bond and relationships formed with their hogar of children.
Volunteers have every other weekend off, as well as up to 22 days of vacation time after four months of service. Vacation must be arranged according to the specific home’s policies.
All NPH volunteers receive room and board, access to medical care and a monthly stipend. Volunteers pay for their transportation to and from the home and medical insurance. Volunteers must serve for at least one year.
