All positions require Spanish fluency. As this project is still developing, volunteer positions are difficult to define completely. Needs and requirements will rapidly change as our family grows. Working in this project will require the volunteer to be utterly flexible, creative and open-minded and to arrive with a positive attitude and a willingness to jump in where needed. Many volunteer openings are combined positions, meaning a volunteer will be asked to fulfill more than one position depending on their abilities and schedule. Volunteer jobs often change during the year of service depending on the needs of the home. Due to housing shortages, male volunteers will share a small house in the nearby town of San Ignacio (1km away from NPH). Female volunteers will share a house used for volunteers, local staff and our Kindergarten classrooms (on NPH property).

NPH El Salvador accepted its first long term volunteers in January of 2007. We are pleased to begin our volunteer program and look forward to inviting more volunteers into our family in the future. Due to continued housing constraints, we are only able have 2 male and 2 female volunteers at any given time. Volunteers in El Salvador will have a private room and bathroom in the same building as the children. Sharing a building with the children provides a wonderful opportunity to become a part of their lives, but also brings obvious challenges, including a lack of privacy. Our home is also remotely located which means that volunteers spend most of their time (including free time) at the home. Due to safety concerns, volunteers need to understand that they will not be able to go to and from the home on their own. Applicants interested in volunteering at NPH El Salvador should have a true desire to become a part of our family, be very flexible and be self-motivated. We look to our volunteers to support the work that is already being done here, rather than to make drastic changes in our home. One of the most important things volunteers can offer our children is love. Someone to listen to them, play with them, love them and support them.

Our volunteer program offers a variety of experiences, personal growth and benefit for volunteers, local staff and the organization. Volunteers can learn about a new area of work or deepen their knowledge in an environment with structures different from those of their home country. They can participate in many activities at the home and feel like a member of the NPH family. Volunteers support local partners in their areas of work, initiating new programs, exchanging professional ideas and cultural aspects. Generally they give more individual attention to children, either at their workplace or with activities organized occasionally by volunteers in the late afternoons and on weekends. We call for a commitment of 12 and ½ months and the volunteer can start at the beginning of January or July. If the volunteer does not have a medium level of Spanish, we ask that he or she takes Spanish classes for several weeks, preferably in Guatemala, before beginning the volunteer service. There are three houses, each with 4 rooms (2 volunteers per room) and a living room with kitchen area. Volunteers receive food and approx. 50 US per month and 4 weeks of vacation. The home is located on the outskirts of the village of Parramos in a temperate climate, near the two cities of Chimaltenango and Antigua and about an hour from the capital.

At NPH Honduras we look for volunteers who have a true desire to join our family. With the exception of two positions which are based in Tegucigalpa, all volunteers live on site. It is important to realize that the Ranch is a somewhat remote location; opportunities to travel to a nearby village or to Tegucigalpa (about an hour away) exist but are not daily. Outside of the specific job position, all volunteers also dedicate at least two hours per night and every other weekend to working directly with a section of children. Our volunteers are dedicated, self-motivated people whose priority is at all times the well being of our children. Being a volunteer on the Ranch means far more than fulfilling the responsibilities of a job; it means becoming a parent figure, a mentor and a friend, being part of a close knit community. The sense of community within the volunteer group and on the Ranch as a whole is very important to us; a successful volunteer must participate in and contribute to that goal. Successful volunteers are very flexible and enthusiastic about taking on extra responsibility and spending extra time with the children. Our volunteers come to Honduras with the primary objective to be part of our family and to serve the children. The purpose of the volunteer program is to provide support to the existing staff at our home. We look to volunteers to cooperate as equals and as partners; not to attempt drastic changes or to “instruct” the local staff. All volunteers must be at least 21 years old. Conversational fluency in Spanish is required (we can recommend in-country Spanish schools to help you improve your Spanish before beginning your service). New volunteer groups begin twice per year, in January and July, for a minimum commitment of 13 months.

NPH Peru started its volunteer program in June 2007. We currently have 3 volunteers in our growing family. In July two new volunteers will join us and we hope to invite more in the future. In line with most NPH houses NPH Peru accepts the majority of its volunteers in July and January and asks them to work at the home for a period of 13 months. Volunteers should be fluent in Spanish. NPH Peru is one of the smaller NPH families. In the past we were first located on rented property in Cajamarca, in the north of Peru and later in the sunny village of Lunahuaná while we were constructing our permanent home in San Vicente de Cañete to which we finally moved in October 2011. We are still in the construction process hoping to build our permanent home, which in the future should include a clinic, administrative offices, therapy center, communal kitchen and dining room, and several family style houses. At the moment we do not have a particular house for the volunteers. Because of limited capacity in our current home, volunteers are required to share a room with other volunteers. Working at NPH Peru will require the volunteer to be utterly flexible and open-minded and to arrive with a positive attitude and willingness to jump in where needed. Most volunteers will be employed for a specific skill but will also be asked to contribute in other areas. We recognize that volunteering can be a frustrating experience at times but with an open and flexible attitude you will flourish as part of the family here at NPH Peru.
